I am reading Mary Beard’s ‘SPQR: A History of Ancient Rome’. I love ancient Rome (I even collect coins from the period), so I am really enjoying and savouring this book. Mary’s voice as an author is clear and practical. Oftentimes, when reading about ancient times, I cannot help but feel like the author over embelishes ancient daily life. Mary is not guilty of that.
